What’s the origin story of Divekick?
Adam Heart and some of his friends went on a 12 hour bender of playing fighting games one day, and by the end of their binge they were a little punch-drunk, so to speak. They started complaining to each other about how overpowered Divekicks are in fighting games, and one of them said, “Wouldn’t it be funny if there was a game called Divekick, with just two characters, Dive and Kick, and all you could do was Divekick?” After laughing about that for a few minutes they decided they would actually build it for fun, and thus Divekick was born.
Could you tell us a bit about how the team creates the games’ characters and their personalities?
We like to think of Divekick as a love letter to fighting games, and it’s with that mindset that we put everything in place. If you’ve played fighting games for any portion of their 25+ year history you will probably catch a reference or allusion to something from your gaming past.

What’s your best tip for players just starting Divekick?
Start with some of the easier characters: Dive, Kick, Redacted and get a feel for how the game works. In general I think Divekick is a game where your emphasis should be on punishing mistakes, so play slow, and don’t be overly aggressive. Let the opponent come at you and overcommit, then take them down.
Who is your favorite character to play as and why?
My two favorites are Dive and Dr. Shoals. I think Dive is one of the strongest characters in the game, he’s not super weak in any area. Dr. Shoals has some unique mechanics that make her super fun to play in general.

What was your favorite part of working on Divekick?
My favorite part is taking it to shows and watching peoples’ reactions that haven’t seen it before play it for the first time. I’ve never seen anyone not have fun, it’s pretty magical.
Not including Mike and his secret weapon, who in the office is best at shoes-for-hands?
Jen got to be pretty competent with it, and I’m pretty godlike at everything so naturally I excelled as well.
What’s next for Iron Galaxy?
We’re currently focused on the PS4 and XBox One versions of Divekick, and we’ll be announcing more about those in short order
