Journalism 1501 is a brand new game studies course that’s being offered this fall semester and the instructor is looking to hire one additional teaching assistant to help with this new class. Ideally, the TA, whether a graduate student or an advanced undergraduate student, would bring expertise in areas such as game design, mobile apps (programming or design), software development, or another domain related to gaming.

You can send applications or any questions that you may have directly to Seth Lewis, the course instructor. Good luck to everyone that applies!

Jour 1501 — Digital Games, Sims and Apps: Storytelling, Play and Commerce

School of Journalism & Mass Communication
Tues/Thurs 11:15-12:30
University of Minnesota
Course Debut: Fall 2014
Taught by: Seth Lewis, assistant professor, sclewis@umn.edu
(faculty bio: http://sjmc.umn.edu/people/profile.php?UID=sclewis)

Digital games are one of the fastest-growing sectors of the entertainment media industry, generating enormous profits for game companies and having a wide-ranging impact on our culture and society. Related developments in mobile applications and virtual-reality simulations are also becoming more than big business — they’re changing the very way we think about media, (augmented) reality, and our human relationships.

In this course, students will:

– Be introduced to the academic study of video games, computer simulations, and mobile applications.
– Examine digital games as forms of communication and interactive storytelling, as well as games as entertainment, in commerce, for social activism, in professional training, and in education.
– Consider the social impact of smartphones, their applications, and their uses in contemporary life — both for game play as well as communication more generally.
– Discuss next-generation virtual reality technology that may change the way we think about immersive media experiences.
– Study the history, ethics, and socio-cultural impact of digital games and related technologies.

On behalf of the entire Glitch Staff, I’m so excited to announce some big changes in our membership structure starting spring of 2014.

When Glitch first started back in 2010, we relied heavily on membership fees to fund our events, equipment, games and initiatives. Over the past four years we have become less and less dependent on these dues and are finally able to make a drastic change this fiscal year. Below is the list of changes that are effective immediately:

Glitch Max Membership

This fee is now $10 per semester for students down from the original $25 in fall of 2013.

Additionally, this card will no longer provide free admission to all Glitch gatherings but instead a discount for all flagship events such as GlitchCon, GameCraft and Welcome Geek. Admission for lounges and community mixers will stay the same but with added benefits such as early registration for events with limited seats or raffles for swag and gear.

What if you’ve already purchased a Max card this semester? No worries, we’ll refund you the difference. Just come by at lounge on any Friday that it’s open and we’ll get it taken care of.

Glitch Flex

Discontinued. Our staff originally thought that the Flex card was going to be a huge hit this past semester but it definitely wasn’t. Only a small handful of individuals opted for the Flex and we don’t feel like it was successful enough to keep around.

*Please note that we will still honor all stamps for those who have purchased this in Fall of 2013 but will no longer sell them in our store.

Free Spring 2014 Membership for TPG Card Holders

If you know what TPG is and still have your membership card, we’d like to say a thank you by providing you with a complementary Glitch Max for Spring of 2014. You guys are the ones who made it all possible by providing us with the funding to purchase our first consoles, games, networking equipment and pay for space rentals. To be frank about it, you’re all pretty rad.

Come to lounge this semester on the February 21st or February 28th with your TPG card and we’ll exchange it with a spring 2014 Max, EZPZ.

We’d like to thank everyone who has been a member, sponsor, or collaborator in the past four years. Your continued support has helped us build a home for video game enthusiasts on campus. We promise to continue providing consistent programming and have some seriously ambitious goals for this upcoming year!

I also want to say a special thank you to all of our past and present staff who have contributed numerous hours writing grants, initiating partnerships, creating content and collaborating with local supporters in order to fund our programs. You guys are da best.

I’ve been hearing a lot of rumbles about an indie fighter with only two game mechanics. At first I thought the concept sounded silly but after watching a few videos and looking at Iron Galaxy’s website, I realized that it indeed is silly and absolutely brilliant.

For those who are unfamiliar, DiveKick is a 2D fighting game that allows you to do only two things in battle – jump and dive-kick. The title is a reference to a common mechanic in many fighting games where characters have the ability to jump in the air and then do a powerful diving kick. The move is apparently OP, but I don’t play enough fighting games to know such things.

The people over at Iron Galaxy don’t just see DiveKick as all fun and games but believe that the game play reinforces fundamental skills of the fighting genre. During a match players must think critically about spacing, timing, and strategies to outwit their opponent.

At this point, I’m sure you’ve guessed that Iron Galaxy is our next indie partner so I’ll depart with some videos for your viewing pleasure and a surprise gift below!
